Illinois Minimum Car Insurance Requirements
In Illinois, liability car insurance coverage is mandatory for all drivers. Liability insurance covers only the other car and/or that car’s driver and passengers when you are found at fault for the accident. Liability insurance will not cover your own costs for personal injuries or property damage. Your liability insurance minimums for Illinois are:
- $25,000 bodily injury liability per person
- $50,000 bodily injury liability per accident
- $20,000 property damage liability per accident
Uninsured motorist coverage pays medical claims that are the fault of the other driver when they either have no insurance or the case of a hit-and-run.
- $20,000 bodily injury liability per person
- $40,000 bodily injury per accident to you and your passengers
Underinsured motorist coverage applies to personal injuries caused by a driver with inadequate insurance. It kicks in after their personal injury coverage has reached the max.
- Equal to amount of Uninsured motorist coverage provided in policy where Uninsured motorist coverage exceeds Financial Responsibility limits.
Illinois does require proof of insurance at all traffic stops so you will need to carry your most recent insurance card in your vehicle or be able to show proof in another manner. In addition, Illinois sends out insurance verification questionnaires randomly and then verifies your responses with your insurance company. If you do not have insurance on your vehicle, your license plates will be suspended.
While minimum car insurance requirements in Illinois are predefined, they are not meant to be a cap on how much coverage you can or should get. You may personally opt for more coverage to protect your financial assets and your vehicle and/or passengers.
